Heading to Maryland? Here are alternate routes following bridge collapse

The Maryland Transportation Authority is suggesting several alternate routes following the collapse early Tuesday morning of the Francis Scott Key Bridge along Intestate 695 in Baltimore.

The bridge collapsed after it was hit by a container ship around 1:30 a.m. while the ship was being navigated through Baltimore Harbor.

According to the transportation authority, motorists must avoid the southeast corridor of I-695. The I-695 Outer Loop is closed at MD 10 (Exit 2) and the Inner Loop is closed at MD 157/Peninsula Expressway (Exit 43).

Alternative routes to cross the Baltimore Harbor will be the Interstate 95 or Interstate 895 tunnels.

Vehicles transporting hazardous materials are prohibited in the tunnels and should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, the transportation authority said. It includes vehicles carrying bottled propane over 10 pounds per container, bulk gasoline, explosives and significant amounts of radioactive materials.
